Setting Goals For Your Business' Success

When you are in business, especially in the start-up stage, you will need to be able to judge the success or otherwise of your actions. One way to do this and increase your chances of success at the same time is the setting of goals. These goals should relate to the accomplishment of the various tasks related to the formation and operation of your own business.

Each goal has to be quantifiable and therefore measurable against your achievements. Therefore, each goal should indicate a plan of action and a date by which that plan should have been carried out. in this way, you will be able to measure your success against the yardstick that you yourself have set. As you achieve each goal, your actual achievement can be compared to your intended position and you can reset the target accordingly either much further forward or not so far further forward.

In this way you will find it easier to maintain both your momentum and your motivation going a pace. An example of a set of goals could be something like the following:

Month One:

* Read up on how to start up and plan a small business

* Visit the Small Business Centre (SBC) and get further information on setting up a business

* Do some more research in the library or online

Month Two:

* Decide on the type of business to start

* Gather as much information as possible on the business

* Attend a course on business start up at the SBC and anywhere else you can find

Months Three - Five: Prepare a plan of action to obtain funds and locate and furnish business

Month Six: Open your business

Year One: Have the business break even

Year Two: Have the business make 15% profit on sales

Years Three - Five: Open a second store

As you can see all of these goals are quantifiable and therefore are also measurable. You do not have to stop there with your goal-setting or you can add to your goals as you go along, but they must be measurable. So, for example, if you want to be a recognized industry leader within your field within five years, state how such a leader is recognized and how you will achieve it. Let's say it means joining industry-related societies, say the Federation of Master Builders and then being the local president in year three. Regional president by year five and national president in year ten.

You may be happy being recognized as an expert locally, which would mean write-ups in local papers and magazines. It does not matter what you want to achieve - write it down in a measurable way and explain the steps within that timetable. If you do not have a timetable like this you will find it impossible to know what you have achieved and when you have done it. Always remember too that the closer your business goals are to your own personal goals, the more likely you are to achieve them.
